Toronto Litho—Canadian Cities Series Type II

The Toronto Lithographing Co. Limited produced two major varieties of their Canadian Cities Series pioneer postcards. The first major variety was issued with a space for the postage stamp and the address on the illustrated front of the card, in compliance with postal regulations in 1898. The cards had a blank back for correspondence.

A second issue filled the space for the stamp with an additional illustration and turned the former address area into a space for correspondence. The back of the card was then overprinted with an undivided back stipulating it was for the application of a postage stamp and address.

The Type II cards have fewer variations, primarily the presence/absence of the text “Wishing You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” on the card front, which also appeared on some patriotic and view cards issued by the Toronto Litho Co. Ltd.
